Start with the subject you want to spend time painting, then compare the amount of detail and the canvas size. This quickly separates simple projects with broad color areas from designs that need more patience and fine brushwork.

Look at the density of the smallest sections rather than the subject alone. Multiple faces, fine fur, leaves, architecture, reflections, lettering, and repeated narrow shapes usually make a canvas more demanding.

Canvas size does not determine difficulty by itself. A 40 x 50 cm design with broad sky or background areas can be much quicker than the same size filled with hundreds of small color changes and detailed edges.
